Summary:

All in all, this is a nicely crafted EP, with fine musicianship and vocals. It will be interesting to see what future releases will bring to the table!

Belfast once turned out the Titanic, now we have the equally titanic new band Solothurn

Originating from Belfast, Solothurn are a new band comprised from several other Northern Irish bands, and an ex member of Nick Olivieri’s Mondo Generator. Describing themselves as “Alt-Metal” and citing influences such as Alice in Chains, Helmet, Tool, and Soundgarden, they have set out to create a sound of their own.

The EP comprises of 3 tracks giving us just over 12 minutes of music, and a good taster of what the band hope to build on as their body of work. First track “Sentience Fades” kicks in immediately with a hard hitting guitar punch that mellows out a tad before the vocals kick in. My immediate thoughts were that they sound similar to Lancaster based metallers Promethium, but soon that is changed with a slightly progressive edge that weaves into the riffs and melodies.

War” is a faster paced track, and also the shortest of the triptych presented to us. I can kind of hear the Helmet influence in this one – its almost familiar, yet not – which is a good thing. An enjoyable 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Rounding off with the title track “In Servitude”, I’m expecting this one to be a bit more complex in its songwriting and structure, and I am not disappointed. It’s got a doomy, yet grungey edge to it, as well as a slower pace that works very nicely with Ryan Adair’s heartfelt vocals. Again, slightly progressive, I’m guessing this is their Tool influence coming in (I only know a couple of tracks by Tool tbh so its a narrow view!) but I enjoy it far more than the aforementioned!.

All in all, this is a nicely crafted EP, with fine musicianship and vocals. It will be interesting to see what future releases will bring to the table!

Line up: Vocals – Ryan Adair, Guitars – Dee Cleland and Simon Beggs, Bass – Ross Hunter, Drums – Marty Elley
