Summary:

If you're a fan of Blues Rock then you really have to buy this album - it's too good to miss.

This year has already been a great year for fans of the Blues or Blues-Rock, but it still manages to keep on getting better, and the new album from King King definitely raises the bar for rivals to match.  Their great live performances on their recent tour have set expectations high for this album and it definitely delivers.

The band did extremely well at the British Blues Awards 2014 winning awards for Album of the year, Band of the year, male vocal of the year, Bass player of the year and Drummer of the year, and as you listen to this new album you have to think they’ll be picking up a load more awards before long.

One thing I’ve noticed with a lot of bands is that while their studio albums may be very good they don’t capture that energy and power that you get at a live show, but King King have successfully managed to bring the energy of their live shows to this album, and since they’re a great live band that is a big plus.

The album features 8 original songs plus one cover – Paul Carrack’s “Just a little lie”.

I suggest that before reading further, you check out the lyric video for the single – Hurricane, and you’ll see exactly what I mean.  It’s a great track to open the album with – nice and loud and capturing that live feel.

“You stopped the rain” is a superb track – beautiful guitar playing and lovely smooth vocals

“Waking up” starts with a strong drum beat accompanied by the bass and then a bit of Hammond organ before we get to the vocals and guitar.  It’s a track that really does showcase the talents of the whole band.

This really is a stunningly good album – beautiful guitar playing, the rich tones of the Hammond organ and a strong contribution from the drums and bass combine to make some fantastic music, and then Alan Nimmo’s vocals are just the icing on the cake.
There isn’t a poor track here, but I do think that the song I like least is actually the Paul Carrack cover – it’s a great song and they’ve done a great job with this cover, but I just think the King King original material is better.

If you’re a fan of Blues Rock then you really have to buy this album – it’s too good to miss.

“Reaching for the light” will be released on 4th May 2015
