Nautilus – M2TM Ireland Finalist 2015 – Interview

Nautilus have made it all the way to the Metal 2 The Masses Ireland final on their second time entering the competition. Their heavy sludge driven groove has been a sure fire hit with the M2TM regulars and at the final they will be dragging the sound deeper than 20,000 leagues; that’s for sure. We caught up with bassist Alan Hanlon ahead of the big show.

For people hearing about Nautilus for the first time. Tell us about yourselves?

Alan: We’re pretty heavy & groovy, taking a lot of influence from bands like C.O.C , Eyehategod, Crowbar, Electric Wizard and also our brothers at home in Ireland that we are very lucky to share the stage with such as Weedpriest, Electric Taurus, Fivewilldie & Astralnaut…We like to have fun. We’re a 4 piece now, down a member since the last competition and to be honest we probably wouldn’t have re-entered this year only for the fact that our creative process is different now with Cathal (Our singer) taking up 2nd guitar duties on top of his Vox. He now writes a lot and we’re getting heavier by the song. We decided why not give it a bash as the new line-up?

Congratulations on reaching the Final of Metal 2 The Masses. Personally, I feel that everyone in the final is a winner but if you were to be chosen to represent Ireland at Bloodstock, what would it mean to Nautilus?

Alan: Yeah it would mean a lot to us for so many people to hear our music, we’d love to start playing gigs internationally and it would definitely give us a leg up. There would be some serious craic had

How has the overall M2TM experience been this year for your band?

Alan: We met loads more great bands which is always good. We got to the final this year which is definitely progress over last year. Overall the whole experience has been most good.

What would you say to bands thinking about applying for next year’s competition?

Alan: Yeah it’s great; you meet tonnes of other bands that you will go on to gig with more and also tonnes of new listeners because you have people coming out and seeing bands that they wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Metal 2 The Masses Ireland is great for networking.

Has there been a memorable moment that stands out in your mind at the shows to date?

Alan: The pit for Snowblind was pretty class in the second semi final. Cloaky busted his foot in the pit during Vile Regression in our Semi Final final. Can’t remember much.

In 5 words, describe what we can expect from you at the final.

Alan: Deep down in ma pluuuums.

If you could pick one song from your arsenal to let the uninitiated hear what your band is all about, what would it be?

Alan: Adrift.
