Nouvelle – Interview

Emerging UK post-hardcorers NOUVELLE’s debut single and video, Canvas – https://youtu.be/-mc4sXUPinI is setting the scene alight. With that in mind, we interviewed the band:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Pearce Hendy – Vocals

Dan Jones – Guitar

Daniel Shannon – Guitar

Liam Browne – Bass

George Woolley – Drums

How and when did the band form?

Nouvelle was formed in mid-2020 by Dan J, Liam & George; they were all part of another band and were looking to push themselves further both in songwriting and in ambition. Pearce joined shortly afterwards, plus another guitarist, who rehearsed a whopping one time – scrambling around for a replacement, Dan remembered a message he’d received from a guitarist… 3 months earlier. He messaged Daniel and for some reason he was still keen after being thoroughly ghosted. He completed the line-up in December 2020, and whilst various lockdowns made initial progress slow, Pearce & Daniel quickly clicked into place.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Around a year ago, when we started to put some finishing touches on our first two demos. Hearing all of the elements come together with some added production, keys & strings gave us all the confidence in the songs we needed to head into the studio. The studio experience itself brought us all closer together and allowed us to play pretty much the whole Halo 2 campaign which was a winner.

Who are your musical influences?

Our influences are varied across the whole band; some of us used to play in a Pop-Punk band and will always have a soft spot for that, whereas others love their Metalcore & Post-Hardcore. The bands that influence our sound the most would be Fightstar, Funeral for a Friend, Thrice, Coheed & Cambria, Deftones & Bring Me The Horizon.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Dan J & Liam have known each other since primary school, and have been playing in bands together since they were 16. George joined their previous band in 2018 and came with them to start Nouvelle, and through sheer coincidence, Pearce and Daniel S had previously met a few years before through a mutual friend’s band!

Are you friends from school or any family relations?

Dan J & Liam have known each other since primary school, then attended secondary school, sixth form & University together. They’re basically inseparable.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

Tricky question, as it’s definitely tough to stand out nowadays. I think our approach to songwriting sets us apart, as we aim to make each song distinct from each other and try to make each part of the song memorable in some way, and not just have them feel like a vehicle to get back to the chorus. The mid-2000’s post-Hardcore influence gives us a focus on catchy lead guitar lines, massive choruses and surprising shifts between melodic and heavy. We also throw in some synth & strings parts to add to the atmosphere.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Heavy guitar riffs interspersed with memorable lead guitar parts with vocals shifting from soaring melodies to aggressive harsh vocals, with tracks densely layered with keys & strings to create full bodied songs.
