Merciless Terror, Nerrus Kor, Cemtex and Iniquitous Savagery live at Pivo Pivo, Glasgow, 25th February

It’s the 25th of February and I am in the Pivo Pivo in Glasgow having a beer while sound checks take place. This is my first live review but this situation isn’t a new one for me. I am a bit anxious about reviewing my partner’s band as it may seem bias but as I am a big fan of their music, I feel it is important to be honest (after all its only my opinion) so I hope they put on a great show!

The Pivo Pivo is a small, cosy venue with a raised stage, quite an imitate space for a gig which is good. A great selection of beers also (if a little pricey!)

Anyway on with the bands…

We kick off the show with Iniquitous Savagery, who formed in 2009.

Iniquitous Savagery

Josh Roberts – Vocals
Joe Fleetwood – Guitar
Chris Ryan – Bass
Euan Harrison – Drums

This band is aptly named, fast brutal riffs and blast beats throughout complete with low growling makes for an atmospheric experience. Impressive skill and precision from every element in the band and interesting periods of change crammed in. However I failed to engage with the music live, personally I have never enjoyed this style of vocal and the relentless speed made me lose interest. I also think there could have been more energy on stage. Though they didn’t quite do it for me Iniquitous Savagery were a stunning first band for the night and got everyone in the mood. Those that enjoy this ferocious form of metal thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Cemtex  Death Metal / Thrash

It has been a while since I saw these guys so I am quite excited. Cemtex are a Glasgow based band, formed in 2008, they released an E.P. in 2009 and are currently in the recording process again.

Neil Fordyce – Guitar
Danny Jamieson – Guitar
Jamie “Spike” Henderson – Bass
“Jamie-9” Mercer – Drums
Martin “The Howl” Howell – Vocals

These guys always have fantastic energy on stage and tonight is no exception, the crowd even got a theatrical showering of sperm from Martin’s microphone. A fast paced thrashy beat, with chunky death guitars surround guttural maniac vocals make for an envelope of noise and insanity. Sections of groove that made everyone turn to the person next to them and make an evil face of appreciation, fantastic.

Nerrus Kor  Death Metal/Black Metal

Vocals–Neil Munro
Guitar–Graham Rockwell Mclaren
Bass–Callum Cant*
Drums–James Shroom Smith

The last time I saw Nerrus Kor was in Glasgow last year supporting Napalm Death so I am very excited to see them. They are currently in the process of finishing a new E.P. which will be released soon. This is a new era for Nerrus Kor, It is evident from this show the new line up gelling and Shroom is bringing his own influence to the band. For anyone who loves groove this band gives it in truck loads…to your face. As well as showing fantastic energy on stage, chunky death metal riffs, blast beats and a definite black metal influence, Neil’s deep growling and high pitched screams slice through to add some insanity. Tempo changes and catchy riffs gives solid structure and interest to each track making for a brilliant live show.

Merciless Terror

Dale Linsdell: Vocals
Dave Siddons: Guitar
Dan Oldcorn: Bass
TBC: Drums

Hailing from Nottingham our headliner for this evening Merciless Terror waste no time in showing Scotland what they are capable of. There aren’t many bands that give this kind of energy on stage and I think it would be fair to say everyone who witnessed it was blown away. Dale Linsdell’s acrobatics was very impressive and his range of vocals on stage reminded me of John Tardy from Obituary. The alliance of Dave and Dan on bass and guitar was extremely tight and powerful with what I thought were influences from Slayer and Carcass in some of the riffs coming through. A particular riff at the middle and at the end of Vortex of Death stuck with me. We were also treated to a series of piercing solos from Dave. Pete on drums drove the tracks forward in a frenzy of blast beats, fast grooves and tight drum fills. Insane energy throughout which transformed the Pivo Pivo into a sea of hair and drunken limbs, an experience everyone here in Scotland will not forget for a while.
