Welcome back Spades GT from Toronto, Canada, who have just released ‘United’ their latest studio album, proclaiming “We’re Spades GT from Toronto, Canada. We’ve come to save rock and roll”. This is no bullshit as these eight songs crossover with punk, thrash or just good old rock and roll, point proven by the incendiary album opener ‘Anthem’. It’s all thrash or be thrashed as this drum driven slammer takes no prisoners in a blink of an eye and you’ll miss these three fiery minutes of pit opening, pounding punishment.
‘United’ has a lo fi intro that accelerates to punk rock attitude with a curled lip snarl. Guitars rage hard and heavy over a tight rhythm section and band fuelled vocals for a march into battle vibe.
Kick drum heaven pins down ‘Demons’, as this broken glass chewed vocal is definitely one for the headbangers.
They channel their inner pop punk in ‘Filthy Lie’ but still has the energy to blow the balls off a charging rhino at 60 paces to get us pogoing along with the brutal riffing, especially from a scorching midway guitar solo.
Get in the pit for ‘Game For Two’ and skank until can’t skank anymore as this full throttle midpaced thrasher fizzes with pent up fury.
‘Wrecked’ (featuring Andrew Moorhouse of the fast life) is not for the faint hearted as it flies by on a hot rails to hell ride to make it the fastest song and also my personal highlight. It pulls no punches for three pulverizing minutes and I didn’t want this song to end.
‘Strong’ (featuring Julian Mersinary Santos of Reel Wolf), shouts out that punks not dead, point proven by this turbocharger that burns down the Sunset Strip, running down all the hair metal bands that stands in the way.
This full on album seems to close far too soon as ‘Die On Our Feet’ (featuring Jay Sarrazin) is their most ballistic number here as this mammoth sized opus brings the hammer down in a blur of insane time changes, especially the superhuman battery from Tyler Reiner.
