UNEARTH – Darkness In The Light (CD)

“Charging out of the late 90s Massachusetts underground in a storm of thunderous riffs and focused aggression, in 2011 Unearth proudly stand at the forefront of modern metal. With Darkness In the Light, their fifth full-length, the quintet have delivered their most honest, powerful, and compelling statement to date, driving a fist into the collective gut of every image-obsessed wannabe metal band currently cluttering up the landscape, and setting a new standard when it comes to marrying precision brute force and exhilarating melody.”

I can definitely agree with their above press release, Unearth have rekindled their fire and passion that seemed to be lacking from their last album ‘The March’, whilst it was a solid record, it didn’t have the same substance as their earlier releases had. ‘Darkness In The Light’ we hear that the guys back on track and making their mark on the world as they slay throughout Europe on the HELL ON EARTH TOUR.

Unearth have poured all their thirteen years of band experience, pain, love and hate into this and have created a album packed full of tight riffs, harmonic guitar work, solid melodies, great breakdowns, soaring solos whilst driven along by pounding drums courtesy of Killswitch Engage drummer Justin Foley’s. Combine this with Trevor’s harsher distinctive vocals fuelled by inner rage at times are being offset by some of Ken clean vocals on tracks to create an outstanding album. Bass wise John finds his groove straight from the start and maintains it through the album.

These 11 tracks send out a clear message that Unearth have not lost their edge when it comes to creating an angst driven yet poignant melodic metalcore album.
