Tokyo Taboo – Interview

Brit rebel rockers TOKYO TABOO hurl out spectacular, character driven, and often shocking vibrant live performances. The band have been likened to Deap Vally, Halestorm, and Juliette & The Licks, TOKYO TABOO have now released their new single, Whiskey – https://youtu.be/CT1MRUNhz3s , which is taken from their much-anticipated upcoming new album. With all of this in mind, we asked the band to introduce themselves:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Dolly Daggerz – Vocals

Mickey Danger – Guitar

George Love – Drums

Jools Kelly – Bass.

How and when did the band form?

We are all from different countries.

Dolly is from the UK but moved around a lot as a kid. She spent her teens in Germany.

Mickey grew up in Poland and moved here to study music.

George is Canadian and Jools is Italian.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

We started really getting going after we released our debut album in 2017. It was then that we got a sense of our own identity. We worked with Noah Shain who helped develop our sound and then played lots of shows to promote the album. All those shows have strengthened our live performance and musical ability.

Who are your musical influences?

Dolly loves big iconic performers like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Madonna.

We are influenced by catchy rock like Green Day, Paramore, Halestorm, old school No Doubt, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Dorothy, Icon For Hire, Sumo Cyco…

Where did the name of the band come from?

We dress like a Japanese anime a lot of the time and Dolly loves the Harajuku girl style. We love the mix of cute and creepy / crazy of Japanese culture. The ‘Taboo’ part in our name is because Dolly is notoriously outspoken. She writes about whatever she wants to say and doesn’t censor herself. The mark of a great songwriter we think!

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Jools and George are identical twins. We call them Joolge.

Dolly and Mickey are husband and wife and the driving force behind Tokyo Taboo.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

There is no one quite like Dolly Daggerz on stage. Her stage presence, killer vocals and acrobatic pole performance is something that can’t be matched. Come to a show and you’ll be talking about us for weeks.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Powerhouse vocals, heavy guitar riffs and sex. Lots of sex.

Do you have a tour on the horizon?

We are very excited to be touring with three of our favourite female fronted bands:

Yur Mum, Healthy Junkies & PollyPikPocketz

We get on so well and the tour is going to be so much fun. What a way to end an amazing year.
