Summary:

It is a pity that this is only the three tracks, as I could more than happily have listened to another 9 or 10 of them, and that is a big part of what makes it so good! Silurian is a band I will certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open for - I just hope we don't have to wait another geological period for more material from them!

Three great tracks from the era of trilobites, ammonites and Eurypterids…

Just to clarify, this isn’t a recording that has recently been unearthed in a palaeontological dig somewhere! This is in fact a release from earlier this month by US blackened death metal trio Silurian. It may only be three tracks long, but this is good, as it definitely leaves you wanting more. Hopefully there will be a full length release in the not too distant future.

Though the running time in total is only just over 14 minutes, Silurian certainly manage to cram plenty into each track. It’s fast, brutal, melodic, and technical. Lots of tempo changes, and some slightly atonal guitar work at times keeps it all very interesting to the ear.

The vocals from Dylan Haseltine are perfectly suited to this type of extreme metal. Happily sitting between death and black styles, they are never overstated, and balance perfectly with the instrumentation. As mentioned above, there is a high degree of technical ability on display here from what is just 2 other members! Lucas Scott on guitars and bass, and Patrick Ruhland on drums.

Summing it up…

It is a pity that this is only the three tracks, as I could more than happily have listened to another 9 or 10 of them, and that is a big part of what makes it so good! Silurian is a band I will certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open for – I just hope we don’t have to wait another geological period for more material from them!
