Cult Revival – interview

Emerging UK tunesmiths CULT REVIVAL have unleashed their anthemic new single and video, Warhead. Watch the video, here – https://youtu.be/tJfmFW66gvI . With the band on the rise, we spoke to guys to find out more:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Chris Horton is on vocals, Craig Matthews on guitar and vocals, and Ben Goodey on guitar and vocals.

How and when did the band form?

Cult Revival came to fruition in Kent after the abandonment of previous long-term projects, and 5 of us came together to create something new and exciting through the lockdowns and beyond. The core members Chris, Craig and Ben now solely drive the movement.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Our time working with Matt O’Grady at The Barn Studios was when the band really came together and released their musical potential. Matt brought out the best in us and pushed our tracks further than we had originally imagined – we couldn’t recommend him more. The live side of the band is energetic but when we’re in the studio we uncover real focus with our ideas and direction.

Who are your musical influences?

One of the things that makes Cult Revival unique is that our individual musical influences vary. From bands such as Circa Survive, Shame, LSDunes, Normandie and The 1975, we draw on our broad influences when writing and creating art direction for the music.

Where did the name of the band come from?

We wanted to create a sense of community, with a deep and loyal following – like that of a cult. The revival portion of the name is a nod to our ‘rebirth’; starting Cult Revival from scratch after years of previous musical efforts in other projects.

Are you friends from school or any family relations?

Ben and Craig are friends from school, which is how they met and almost immediately began playing in bands together, writing original music and playing this at live shows from an early age. Chris came into the fold in the later years after meeting him on the local gig circuit, with all three of us have been playing and writing together since then.

Where have you played or toured?

As a relatively new band to the scene, We have covered bases in all across the UK. As Cult Revival, we have supported notable bands such as Drones, and in previous musical endeavours have supported acts such as Mallory Knox, Dance Gavin Dance, Dream State and Lower Than Atlantis.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

Cult Revival is based around the idea of a community following, a space where the music relates and encourages us to talk and think about our feelings, life experiences and troubles/joy in a safe space through our music. Our music reflects our varied influences and draws on some very unique pairings especially with the vocal contrast between Chris’s haunting melodies and Ben’s brutal harsh vocals.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it? Groovy, Catchy and Deep Cutting.
