Summary:

As far as first albums go, Afternoonified is bloody strong! I have to say that I’m not really a fan of a couple of songs as, while they are well written, they didn’t really do anything for me personally. However, if that’s the only complaint I have, consider me hooked to the rest of the album. Heavy!

With two previous EPs to their name, Victorian Whore Dogs are becoming a well-known and well respected name in the UK underground metal scene. Afternoonified is their first full length and showcases songs both old and new.

Opening with the power house of monolithic sludge “Mutton Shunter,” Victorian Whore Dogs burst into life with no holding back. Heavy riffs, dissonant chords and all the groove are what this song is all about, and the album doesn’t let up either.

Next up (and to apparently piss off Star Wars and Star Trek fans), is the equally powerful “Captain Kirk was my Favourite Stormtrooper.” This song along with the unbelievably heavy “I have Become…” are just two songs from Afternoonified that cement Victorian Whore Dogs among the most sludge bands in the genre.

Lyrically this is an album with two sides. For the most part it’s a delicious cocktail of debauchery and silliness (track four “Murder Boner” having some of the most inspired and gag inducing lyrics on the whole album), however, there are some heavy emotional beats on Afternoonified. “Barrington Monroe” and final track “Sebastian Tenderhoof” hit right in the feels and may even be difficult listening for anyone who has suffered periods of depression in their life. This isn’t a bad thing at all. On an album this heavy, some emotion is kind of needed.

Production wise, Afternoonified is leaps and bounds ahead of Victorian Whore Dogs last two EPs; Fetch and Hobo Chic. Having seen this band many times live, the mix on this album is pretty much perfect for their sound and it almost sounds live (aside from the double tracked vocals of course). Victorian Whore Dogs keep the heavy grooves coming in tracks like “(I Can’t Belive it’s) Nutbutter” and my personal favourite track on the album “Southern Fried Homicide”. While there is some catharsis on Afternoonified, this former style is really what the band do best, and yet it seems so effortless.
