One Last Daybreak – Interview

UK post-hardcorers ONE LAST DAYBREAK announce themselves with their new EP, A Thousand Thoughts, out 7th April. We asked the guys to tell us a little more about their formation and background:

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

Vocals: Connor Catchpole;
Rhythm Guitar/Vocals: Jack Smith;
Lead Guitar: Matt Pike;
Bass: James Hicks;
Drums/Vocals: James Hart;

How and when did the band form?

The band formed behind the scenes in late 2017, but officially launched January 15th 2018. We are from Romford, UK, sharing a town alongside bands such as Create To Inspire and Cabin Boy Jumped Ship.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Late 2017 was when we really started working on this as a full time project. It began as an outlet from our previous bands, but we’re all in love with the emo scene and with emo revival on its way, it seemed fitting to put this band together full time.

Who are your musical influences?

Our influences are mostly bands from the 2000’s emo scene, such as: Senses Fail, Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, My Chemical Romance, Yellowcard, Funeral for a Friend, Mayday Parade. There are also modern Metalcore/Melodic Hardcore influences, such as: Being as an Ocean, Holding Absence, Oceans Ate Alaska and Architects.

Where did the name of band come from?

We initially chose the name ‘Short of Daybreak’ for the band, named after an Underoath song. But we had to change the name very quickly after learning that it was already taken from another band from Australia. After that, we just came up with a phrase that fit with the word ‘Daybreak’.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?

Most of us met whilst playing shows in our two previous bands. James (Hart) and Jack played in a Metalcore band, whilst the others played in another band of a similar genre.

Where have you played or toured? Please name all countries / regions and recognised bands that you have played with.

In previous bands, we’ve played a lot across the UK with notable acts such as: Cabin Boy Jumped Ship, Canvas, Counting Days, Faces of Eve, InVisions, Borders etc. As One Last Daybreak, we’re set to play in various venues across the UK with bands such as Better Than Never and Coast to Coast.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

There’s not many bands of this genre (Emo) out there in the local scene right now. Emo revival seems to be limited to the old veterans of the 2000’s coming back together, but there aren’t and new, fresh, local bands contributing to that. We decided to change that. Our idea was to write old school Emo but with a twist, a more modern influence from the current Melodic Hardcore and Metalcore scenes that are thriving right now. That way, our current generation will like us, alongside those that are more mature and here for the nostalgia.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Emotional. We really mean what we write. It’s uncensored, honest, and raw. We want to be as honest to ourselves and everyone else as we can. We want others to find solace, or hope, in our music.
