Failstate – Interview

High flying Alt-rock crew FAILSTATE continue their climb loaded with their blistering new single and video, Lifeguard – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7g0m8bN5_c . We checked in with the band to find out more:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Tom Gibbons – Vocals & Guitar

Dave Morgan – Vocals & Guitar

Kyle Haggerty – Bass

Leah Davies – Drums

How and when did the band form?

We had our first Jam as a trio (Dave, Leah & Tom) in March 2020 just as the lockdowns started which put us on hold but gave us a year to write some new material which we started rehearsing again late 2021. Kyle joined early 2022 and we played our first show September 2022.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

We always had great chemistry in our previous project but as soon as Kyle joined our sound really started coming together, we rehearsed religiously, and a solid bassist and a little extra motivation was the missing piece!

Who are your musical influences?

2000’s/2010’s alternative rock – Funeral for a Friend / Taking Back Sunday / Linkin Park / Basement / Title Fight

Where did the name of the band come from?

Coming up with a band name can be the hardest part of the whole process but we wanted something that sounded “cool” and memorable – we booked our first show before coming up with a name & needed something for the poster, so it was a vote between ‘Dour’ / ‘Brainworm’ & ‘Failstate’.

Name one crazy, interesting, or wild fact or story about the band or a specific member?

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? Leah, Dave & Tom know each other from a previous project ‘Alaska Alaska’ (2017) and we were all mutual friends of the singer, we stayed in touch & became great friends since the project ended. Kyle & Leah have known each other since secondary school and played in their first band together!

Where have you played or toured?

We’ve worked hard over the last year building a community across South Wales & the Southwest UK + an acoustic set at 2000 Trees festival and opening at the o2 Islington. We had our first sold-out hometown headline show in Newport December 2023 (100 cap.) We’ve been fortunate to share the stage with: As December Falls / The Nightmares / Saint Agnes / Shell / Gürl + many others.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We have a unique blend of nostalgic emo that steps just outside the boundaries of the genre norms, taking elements from our diverse musical tastes and adding a modern twist to create an alluring and intriguing sound.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Like a ferocious exotic feline with a timid side. Sad songs with big riffs & hooks.

Where can we find your social media sites?
