Finnish band Cvlt Ov The Svn describe themselves as Occult Murder Pop. Although I can see where they are coming from with that description, what I hear is a modern goth band, and a very good one at that. The four songs on this E.P. are musically luscious and are counterbalanced by seductive raspy vocals that results in a sense of malice.
From the first few notes of title track Luna In The Sky Forever we see Cvlt Ov The Svn are in familiar goth territory with a twist; the guitar sound is almost Celtic in places and it makes the song stand out with some individuality. An easy song to dance or sway to with it’s seductive melody, it sets the atmosphere for the rest of the E.P. In contrast, the second track, Whore of Babylon sounds like heavy HIM sung by a seedy troll.
The Pit with its hoarse vocals and thumping drums reminds of Midnight Configuration resulting in a malevolent sound. Closing track The Murderer has a verse with a lovely old school base line and a dark wave chorus that could fill a dance floor.
Each of these four dark tales has it’s own atmosphere yet remains cohesive as part of the whole. This is pure dark escapism. The heavy guitar based music is reminisant of Rosetta Stone mixed with a little Sinnergod and 69 Eyes. The vocals are a cross between Era III Mortiss and Newlydeads era Taime Downe. An enjoyable listen and hopefully we will hear much more from Cvlt Ov The Svn however they are defined.
