The music business is a strange, but also a rewarding animal, point proven by Crowned Hyenas,a three piece alternative rock trio from East Anglia . A few weeks ago they had just finished a UK tour, ending at Percy’s Cafe Bar in Whitchurch, playing with The Mad Badgers and headliners, Chasing The Fall. They were all set to head home but by chance, The Arena venue in Crewe asked them if they wanted to come on over and play for an hour before Statease Quo, a local Status Quo tribute band played their full on set.
So after talking to the band before their gig, I found out they had just released a four track EP, called Misery Loves Company, so the least I could do was to review these four songs.
Opening track ‘Best Kept Secret’ has a boisterous bass intro over an almost whispered vocal that explodes into life as this watertight trio rage away hard and heavy on air guitar inducing riffing to keep the headbangers happy.
‘About Time’ is a gritty ballad of laid back vibes to soothe the soul amongst the cacophony raging around it.
‘Hideout’ is a slight veer from the bombast to let this melodies with muscle brain melter surge along to make me appreciate power trios even more to surge along with aplomb.
This highly impressive EP bodes well for their future as it closes on the heartbreaking ‘Been A While’. It’s a ballad to crush you in a good way that ebbs and flows on a bluesy shuffle for sheer beauty personified.
