Belladonna – Borderline, London – 26th February 2014

Mishkin Fitzgerald

First up was Mishkin Fitzgerald, who normally performs with her band, Bird eats baby, but tonight she’s performing solo.  Sat at a keyboard she sings and plays keyboards.  It’s a simple but effective performance and she sounds great.  For me the highlight of her set was her cover of the song “Help yourself” by the Country band ‘The Devil Makes three’.

Next up were Belladonna.  Although their latest album, “Shooting dice with god” was released last year it’s only this month that it has received a full UK release and is available in stores for the first time, so it’s slightly surprising that tonight’s set only includes two songs from the album – the excellent “Karma warrior”, and “I set my controls to overdrive”.
Set list choices aside, the Italian band are definitely on form tonight and sound great – beautiful vocals, nice piano work and some great guitar parts backed up with solid bass and drums.  As well as a selection of their own material the band also include a cover version tonight – an excellent version of the Guns’n’Roses classic “Sweet Child O’ mine”.

During the rockier songs guitarist Dani Macchi leaps around, headbangs and generally puts a whole load of energy into his performance.

For the encore they throw in two more covers – this time blues classics “Got my mojo working” and “John the revelator” before ending the night with “I set my controls to overdrive”.

This was a very good performance and one that certainly went down very well with the fans, some of whom had travelled a long way for this show.  The band do have a very distinctive sound, and Luana Caraffa’s vocals play a large part in that.  This distinct sound does help them stand out from the crowd, but equally it does make it hard to think of bands that are a good fit to tour with.

Tonight was a very good gig – it’s a real shame Belladonna don’t play the UK more often.  Hopefully next time they play the UK they’ll tour a bit more widely rather than doing just a single date in London.
