Talk about pigeonholing an artist before listening to them properly, so I’m eating a huge slice of humble pie here whilst listening to the rather splendid new single ‘Stand On My Own’ from Chantel McGregor, taken from forthcoming, independently released studio album, The Healing. To my ears it opens with a huge riff that resonates throughout these four fiery minutes of a raunchy rocker that ascends on a vocal that could melt the coldest heart. Now all I have to do to is wait to review the album and nirvana will surely be reached based due to the quality of the single, the second taken from the new album.
‘The Healing’ is set to reveal a whole new side to Chantel McGregor in both a musical and emotional sense and marks the first time that Chantel has written material of an autobiographical nature. “Its central themes are loss, grief and heartbreak, but the album isn’t exclusively about sadness because we come out the other side of it all,” Chantel explains. “There is light and positivity at the end of the tunnel.”
She goes onto say “At its core, Stand On My Own is about overcoming the weight of the anxieties and fears that can hold us back in life. It delves into the struggle of overthinking, battling internal voices, and dealing with the consequences of past mistakes or regrets.
