Old Selves – interview

Brit newcomers OLD SELVES have recently released their debut EP, Two Minds. The rising quartet have picked up some strong praise, so we decided to find out more:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Felix Manders-Wilde – Vocals and Guitar,

Marcus Pickles – Vocals and Guitar,

Ray Kilvington – Bass,

Lawrence Clarke – Drums.

How and when did the band form?

Old Selves began as a concept from a very young age, before we knew it even existed yet. Many cheap practice guitars, indie and covers bands and jams in garages eventually led to us coming together years later and finally making something of it. Something that fits in line with our true musical values. Heavy.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

During the coronavirus lockdown, we made a lot of changes. We realised that Old Selves could have something good going on. Since beginning the writing process for the debut EP ‘Two Minds’, things have really ramped up and we have found ‘that’ sound.

Who are your musical influences?

Beartooth, Fightstar, While She Sleeps, Blood Youth, Trivium, Lamb of God, Mendehlson, Chopin.

Where did the name of the band come from?

In the early days of forming the band, we were in the pub thinking about band names. It was the first time Felix and Ray had properly met and both were getting really excited about the band in a way that they hadn’t about music for a while. Felix said ‘I feel like my old self again’ and that there is how it was born; Old Selves.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend?

Felix and Ray went to the same school but didn’t know it until about 6 months into the project. The band has mainly met by seeing each other’s old bands playing live/gigging with each other/networking. We’re like brothers now!

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

What makes a band is the connection between its members, we feel. Of course, many great bands have this, however Old Selves feel that we have an unreal bond as a band. This allows us to be open and honest with each other, saying it how it is, which then feeds through into our music. We would describe our music as intense, heavy and honest. We strive to avoid things being over processed, but of a good quality. That goes for our music, particularly our lyrics, our attitude and hopefully our presence as a band.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Fury is defined as ‘extreme strength or violence in an action’. Imagine that, via the means of guitar, pounding drums and heavy vocals. You have Old Selves.
