The Answer – Sundownders Album – review

THE ANSWER releases their long-awaited new album ‘Sundowners‘ on 17th March 2023, via Golden Robot Records and 7Hz.

Celtic beats draw you in on album opener Sundowners. The psychedelic vibe is hard and heavy and almost hypnotic as Cormac Neeson’s smokey vocals sing over the entrancing rhythm. It’s like The Doors and Led Zeppelin got together and the party has just begun. Is this a new era of The Answer after the Northern Irish rocker’s almost seven-year hiatus?

Sundowners is filled with bangers.  Take your pick from the punchy Blood Brother which was their first taster and single released in October 2022. More cowbells are not needed on this energetic roller.  The familiar vibes of The Answer make a revival on California Rust, Cormac goes for the high-octane vocals, paced with 70’s rock and roll, this is blues rock played from the heart. Continuing the heartfelt vibes, the kick-ass bass-infused riffs from Micky Waters provide the beats on Want You To Love Me, which struts along in true Answer fashion.

Attitude is everything and they are giving it in spades!

Getting their kicks on Oh Cherry, which is set to get its single/video release this St. Patrick’s day. Soaked in rhythmic Blues, Cormac opens on his harmonica, it’s diverse and encompasses intoxicating blues-rock and roll.  Sundowners takes down the pace on No Salvation, with the melodic ‘oooh, ooohs’ providing the intro on this more gospel-inspired burner.

You get the commitment of these kindred spirits on this album, attitude is everything and The Answer is giving it in spades! Living on The Line is boisterous with elements of The Answer we know, filled with a drum-laden groove, James Heatley smashes the skins and the killer solo riffs from Paul Mahon, go to create this belter of a track.

Taking me back to the days of their sassy ‘Raise a Little Hell’ album, the guys are back in their element on the va-va-voom boomer Get Back On It.

Feeling bright and breezy,  the album plays out with the  Always Alright, filled with big choir choruses, and a Wurlitzer organ, you get the feeling of summertime Americana rock and that ain’t a bad place to end on.

In conclusion – Attitude is everything and The Answer give it in spades! Back in their element, you get the commitment of these kindred spirits on their blistering new album Sundowners. The 11 songs have been music to my ears. I’ve not covered every track, so come discover the magic yourself.
