Tesla debuted Mechanical Resonance to critical acclaim in 1986 and it quickly gained platinum status. Now, fast forward to 2016 and the band are celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of their stunning debut. This new offering means Mechanical Resonance is captured live in its entirety from Salt Lake City.

First of all ‘Rock Me To The Top’ kicks off and moves quickly into ‘Ez Come Ez Go’. While many bands trade on past glories, as the album progresses it is apparent that there is no nod to nostalgia here. The songs sound immediate and urgent, especially on ‘Changes’ which showcases the nuances and dynamics that make Tesla a great live act.

The interplay between Frank Hannon and Dave Rude on guitar is exemplary. Jeff Keith’s vocals similarly make the band soar on ‘2 Late 4 Love’ and ‘L’il Suzie’. As you arrive at show closer ‘Modern Day Cowboy’ it seems like you have finally been captured by Tesla’s essence.

The album concludes with bonus studio track ‘Save That Goodness’ written and produced by Phil Collen of Def Leppard. While the influence is clear, Tesla make it their own with a particularly solid vocal performance and vibe on guitar.

In conclusion Mechanical Resonance Live captures a band confident in their own skins. In other words, as you all know, real rock wears its heart on its sleeve. Consequently, as a result of this heart on sleeve behaviour, we get authentic and timeless rock & roll. Nikolai Tesla created many things, and this little live gem is maybe a direct descendant of his work ethic. Finally, well let me put it this way, turn it up.
