Pretty Maids – Motherland

Motherland is the new album of the Danish melodic metal band ‘Pretty maids’. The band was formed in 1982.

At first I have to say what I really like is the variety in the album. Some songs are more melodically, other songs a little bit harder almost like power metal.

TPRETTY MAIDS Moth COVERhe album starts with a very melodically song called ‘Mother of all lies’. The song is really well-done. It has a slow start and later it gets more power. I really like the high voice of Ronnie Atkins. You can already listen to the song on Youtube and make your own opinion. ‘To Fool a Nation’ is a very melodically song almost a ballad. ‘Confession’ is an intro for the following song ‘The Iceman’. It tells you a short story. ‘The Iceman’ is one of the more powerful songs. What I really like are the fast changes of different guitar riffs and slower and faster parts in the song. ‘Sad to see you suffer’ and ‘Infinity’ are also almost ballads but with sometimes more powerful moments in the refrain than ‘ To Fool a Nation’. ‘Hooligan’ is my personal favorite song of the album. It contains all what this great album has: an good melodically intro, powerful riffs and Ronnie Atkins really good and high voice. About ‘ Why So Serious’ I can only say the same like about ‘Sad to see you suffer. But it’s a little bit more powerful. ‘Motherland’ and ‘ I See Ghosts’ are some of my favorite songs of the Album. I really like the variety of the use of the voice and the riffs in the songs. Sometimes the voice is higher sometimes a little bit lower. ‘Bullet for You’ is then really a ballad. It’s the slowest song of the album but also well-done. The refrain of this song is awesome, it’s again the only moment with power in the song. ‘Who What Where When Why’ then is the most powerful song of the album. It’s more an melodic power metal song. It has through and through a really good guitar riff. The refrain of the album is very easy built up. It’s maybe a song that could be an earwig for some. ‘Wasted’ is a good last song of the album; also very melodically and nevertheless with much power.

All in all I have to say this album is one of the best melodic metal albums I’ve listened to the last years.

About Del Preston

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweet shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me and Keith Moon and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweet shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shop owner and his son, that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business really. But sure enough, I got the M&Ms and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
