Dohny Jep – Interview

DOHNY JEP produce a sound packed sturdy grooves, driving guitar work and contagious hooks. The band reveal their debut album, L.U.S.T,  on Friday 10th July. The rising rockers have also just dropped a new single and video for the album’s namesake, L.U.S.T – . With all of this in mind, we asked the guys to introduce themselves:

– What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Dohny Jep is Stuart Day, Pete Herbert, Rowan Tremain & Wayne Ambrose. Stuart and Wayne play guitar in the band whilst Pete (Bass) and Rowan (Drums) make up the rhythm section! Pete and Stuart share lead vocal. With them both looking after vocals means that they are able to take extra care when writing, adding in-depth harmonies and infectious earworms!

– How and when did the band form?

The band formed in early February 2019 when Stuart and Pete decided to sit down and write a song together for fun, after a few hours of work the original demo of ‘Ambushed’ had been recorded. A year after they had formed, Rowan and Wayne (previously in bands with Stuart) were asked to join as they are good friends to the band and have extensive knowledge and experience within music.

– When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

Pete and Stuart had met a year before the band started, so had built a friendship before the idea of playing music together was even considered. Once they began to write together and found that their styles were well suited, the desire to push the project as far as they could was born. Countless hours and many enjoyable writing and recording sessions later, the band started to look like there was true potential in achieving the success that they both believed the songs they were crafting deserved! But it wasn’t until Wayne and Rowan became part of the band that things really did fully gel, as soon as we hit the rehearsal rooms with our live show preparation, we knew that it was meant to be.

– Who are your musical influences?

Collectively as a band we feel that Don Broco, Bring Me The Horizon, The 1975 and Zedd have been the biggest influences to us and our sound. Individually….
Stuart: Alexisonfire, Twenty One Pilots
Rowan: Periphery, Good Tiger
Wayne: The Contortionist, Sleep Token
Pete: Queen, Korn.

– Where did the name of the band come from?

The name had been on Stuart’s mind a long time before he met Pete, he just hadn’t found the right sound that suited the quirky name! The name is a spoonerism of Johnny Depp, but with some letters taken out. We both have an odd sense of humour so this worked out pretty well for us! We also felt that like with our music it was a memorable name that would stick in people’s heads!

– In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?
We write our songs in the studio rather than in a practice room. We feel that this way of writing helps us to put the pieces together in the best way possible, getting the best performance out of each other as the song writing progresses and ensures that we do not back down from the challenge of writing a song that we are both immensely proud of as the end result, with ear worms a plenty!
Furthermore, due to everyone in the bands backgrounds in other bands both touring, and studio work means that they know the importance of hard work and aren’t blinded by the overnight rock-star dream, as to say that they know that you only get what you earn. Alongside this, they have a home studio where the majority of the songs are recorded to be sent off to our producer Rhys May (Assistant producer to Dan Lancaster for Don Broco, Bring Me The Horizon, While She Sleeps).

– If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Huge, infectious and energetic, with singalong choruses and headbanging riffs that really drive the song home!

– Where can we find your social media sites?

Facebook –
