Dirt Box Disco – Spunk Volcano & Weab.I.Am, Interview – 22nd December 2013

Louella Deville from PlanetMosh caught up with Weab.I.Am and Spunk Volcano from Dirt Box Disco, for a quick chat after their ‘sold out’ show in Manchester on 22nd December. Being interviewed by a woman dressed as Puss in  Boots is all in a days work for Dirt Box Disco! Here’s what they had to say: –

You’ve just done a brilliant show. Was that your last show of 2013?

Weab: No we’ve got another one to do in Corby at The Zombie Club.

How do you find the audience reactions?

Weab: They’re awesome. We’ve got the best bunch of friends ever!

Spunk: The songs are dead easy, dead sing along so all you have to do is play them and they sing it for you.

You’ve got Dirt Box Disco and (to Spunk) I believe you are also going to be in Spunk Volcano and the Eruptions, will that be run parallel to Dirt Box Disco?

Spunk: Not parallel it’s like a side salad. It’s some extra songs I had, bunched them all together and recorded some. I’ll record some more, do a few shows. It’s a bit of fun for me.

You’re still going to be in Dirt Box Disco as well?

Spunk: Oh god, yeah!

Weab: We’d have to sack him first!

Both: Ha, ha.

How did the dressing up and the outfits come about?

Spunk: We started off just for a laugh. Simple as that, we were only going to do three shows and that was it. We had three shows booked and that was all it was ever going to be. As soon as we’d done the three, people were like ‘Come and play here, come and play here’ and we only dressed up…..

Weab: ….for the fun of it!

…and you’re still going. When did you start?

Spunk: It will be four years ago on the 28th (December).

Did you play Rebellion last year?

Spunk: Yes and the year before.

I believe you’re playing there next year. Both bands?

Both: Yes

Spunk: I will be – yeah

That’s pretty awesome.

Spunk: It certainly is!

(A large burp then erupted from Spunk Volcano!)

Spunk: Did you get that?

I’ll try and transcribe it!

Spunk – Ha, ha!

To both as Dirt Box Disco. Have you got a new album coming out this year?

Weab: We have, we don’t want to disclose the name of it just yet. We’re still having fun. We’re going to the studio in the middle of January

So that’s Dirt Box Disco. What have Spunk Volcano and the Eruptions got coming out?

Spunk: I’m recording mine February and that will come out later next year depending on when me and STP have had a conversation, as to when he wants to put it out, so lots to do.

So (to Spunk) you’re going to play Manchester for your album lauch, then (to both) Dirt Box Disco have an album launch.

Weab: We certainly have

Things are looking bright for Dirt Box Disco and Spunk Volcano!

Weab: It’s looking absolutely amazing, like I said, we’ve got the best friends in the world.

Spunk: Yeah, it’s all really good.

You’ve got a few gigs lined up then?

Weab: It’s all pretty much booked up for next year!

Spunk: We’ve got about fifty for next year.

Weab: It’s flying for us.

Pretty good going. Any message for your fans? Why should they come and see you guys?

Weab: We love you! Simples!

Spunk: When you come just keep singing, just keep singing, sing it back!

Thank you very much for taking to PlanetMosh guys! See you in 2014!

Both: Thank you very much!

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
