Can I get a 7!! Dirt box disco bring their high energy burst of post punk rock fuelled selves back for their 7th release and 6th studio album ‘’Immortals!’’ In line with what you would expect to hear from Dirt Box Disco, this album has more ‘whoa’s’ and nah, nah, nah’s and boom bashing riffs and slamming base lines and hard hitting drums than ever! Not bad for a band that was originally only going to play 3 gigs, for a laugh back in 2009.
As the Intro track ‘Ready or not’ says ‘’these bunch of bastards are coming for ya!’’ Are you ready to take a chance and pick up the pace and rock ya punk asses to the floor with these teenage love struck rappers? Weab. I. Am and co is giving it their all on ‘Teenage Lovestruck Blues ‘, and following on with ‘You’re the only one for me’ delves deeper into their musical aptitude, with a slightly more modern punkish take on a love song, I promise you won’t feel awkward at all falling for this ballard-esque ditty. Leaping to a more grunge induced ‘Caveman’ about the use of social media and how no one lives like Barney Rubble (Flintstones), oh the simple days without technology! I really like how DBD capture the everyday essence of life in their songs. ‘Stop shouting’ is an uplifting clever mix of old punk charm entwined with their own take on punk rock/glam. Whilst ‘Mummys boy’ is the shortest track on the album, it’s a cleverly mixed vibe of punk rock noise, pounding in at 1 min 23 seconds of sheer brilliance! Dirt Box Discos stand out track for me has to be ‘Joyce’s Voices’ with its ‘’chopsticks’’ style intro, it tells a tale of the local mad woman/ old lady next door but there’s nothing weird or scary about this song, with it’s easy going lyrics and bop a long to beats and melodic guitar, it’s just a great everyday story written up in to song. Mayday! Don’t worry the boys haven’t gone soft on you, bringing it back fast and hard on ‘10 pint Kamikaze Jaeger Smash’ and ‘Shut the fuckin door’, Yeah, yeah, maybe you’ve heard it all before but you haven’t heard it played this way! This album has been done and dusted in the true renascence of all that is Dirt Box Disco. So, go grab yourself a slice of punk rock pie and add Immortals to your box of tapes!
