Fed up of festival food? Well here’s a video to show you just how easy it is to make a decent breakfast to set you up for the day.
Serves 6
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 x Tins of bacon grill
2 x Tins of beans
2 x Tins of tomatoes
10 x Eggs
12 x Slices of toast
12 x Sausages
EQUIPMENT:
2 x Pans
2 x Small frying pans
1 x Toasting rack
5 x Solid fuel cookers
1 x Spatular
2 x Spoons
1 x Whisk or fork
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: You will require 3 people to make this breakfast (if you want it doing quickly without burning anything)
PERSON ONE – Toast, beans and tomato duty.
1. Put 4 slices of toast on the toaster and balance one on the top (TIP: This makes the 4 slices on the rack cook faster and you gain an extra slice of toast.
2. Repeat once more and then finally toast 2 more slices so there is 12 slices in total (2 slices per person)
3. Pour the contents of the beans and tomatoes into one pan. (TIP: This way you can reduce the amount of pans required)
4. Occasionally stir the beans and tomatoes so they don’t burn to the bottom of the pan.
TIP: The toast will probably be cold by the time breakfast is served but eating the toast with warm food is just fine.
PERSON TWO – Scrambled egg duty.
1. Crack 10 eggs into a pan and whisk.
2. Add a bit of salt and a splash of milk.
3. Put on the heat and whisk until you have scrambled eggs!
TIP: Instead of a whisk you can use a fork, this way you don’t need to bring unnecessary equipment.
NOTE: If substituting a whisk to a fork, please make sure it is metal or heat resistant as melted plastic fork doesn’t tase very good.
PERSON THREE – Sausages and bacon duty.
1. Slice the bacon grill into 12 equal slices.
2. Put the frying pans on the heat and add a splash of oil.
3. Once the oil has heated put 12 sausages into one of the pans and put 6 slices of bacon grill into the other pan. (NOTE: Bacon grill cooks faster than sausages)
4. Once cooked, take the bacon grill out of the pan and cook the remaining 6 slices.
5. Once the remaining bacon grill and sausages are cooked, take the pans off the heat.
EVERYONE – Serving duty.
1. Dish the food out equally between 6 people.
2. Enjoy a decent meal at a festival.
BEST STUFF TO USE
For the toast we found that warburtons milk roll works the best for toasting on a camping toaster as other bread is too big to fit on the rack and takes a long time to cook. Here are some preliminary tests that we did before heading off to the festival:

| First of all we checked out the normal bread that we already had at home but the slices were too big, which meant that only some parts of the bread would be toasted and others wouldn,t. |
Next we used the same bread and cut the slices down but they were still too big to fit correctly on the toaster and if we had cut them down any more, there would be no point in having toast. |
We then looked for smaller bread which did fit on the toaster but took far too long to cook, which meant that the rest of the breakfast would be ready before the toast was even finished. |
Finally we tried milk roll which fit perfectly and cooked fast enough to be able to make several rounds. The bonus about this bread is that you can fit an extra slice on the top of the toaster! |
 |
We found that this toaster may not be the best toaster but it is the best toaster for 4 slices of bread or in our case 5 when using the milk roll bread. We recommend buying this toaster when camping with medium – large groups. |
Can be purchased from most camping shops.Price: £2.95 (approximately) |
 |
With most festivals restricting gas cookers, the only alternative to cooking yourself is to use solid fuel cookers, which in fact cook food faster than normal gas cookers but do require a lot of solid fuel tablets. We recommend taking several solid fuel cookers. |
Can be purchased from most camping shops.Price: £3.90 (approximately)Includes 24 tablets |
 |
If you’re going to be following our breakfast tutorial we recommend you take 2 small light weight frying pans. Most camping pans have detachable or folding handles to make packing a lot easier. |
Can be purchased from most camping shops.BARGAIN – Pound Land often get camping equipment during summer so look out for pans. They are good value! |
 |
An alternative to frying pans would be mess tins which fit inside of each other to save space. However, they don’t work as well as frying pans and don’t fit as much in them. We would only recommend using mess tins if you’re camping with a small group. |
Can be purchased from most camping shops.Price: £5 (approximately)Look out at Pound Land. They have these in the summer months. |
 |
A camping pan set is essential to festival cooking. Normally in a pan set you have 2 large pans, a kettle and a frying pan. All of these fit inside of each other which saves a lot of space and is easy for packing. We recommend purchasing one of these sets whatever the group size. |
Can be purchased from most camping shops.Price: £18 (approximately)Seasonal shops often reduce camping equipment at the end of summer. |
